A fantastic crowd turned out to Pairc Tomas Ruiséil on Sunday to see Down fire their first Salvo of the New Year in the Dr McKenna Cup. Having gone through the whole of 2016 without a win it was great to see the County get off to a win over the students of Queens University, who had 3 RGU lads in their panel, with Anthony Doherty and Conor McGrady starting and Jonathan Deeny as reserve keeper.
Peter and Damien Turley came on for Down in the second half though it was disappointing not to see Gerdie Collins make an appearance on his home turf.
A big thank you who helped get the complex ready for the match, 10 years since we last had a Senior County Match in the County Town. The place was in fantastic condition for the game and the club is indebted to all who worked tirelessly under the stewardship of Colm McNeill and Marty Brady with the preparations as well the small army of volunteers who helped on the day.
Preparations for the coming season are under way and mentors for all teams will be in place in the next few weeks.
Congratulations to Hannah Perry and Naoimh Madine who won the girls U 14 Doubles Handball title on Saturday, defeating Ella McCumiskey and Tiernajhkjhu of Clonduff in the final, whilst Cara Doran lifted the singles title with victory over Ella Gribben of Mayobridge. Well done girls and well done to coach Elaine McKervey.
